Do any fellow trumpeters have any experience with the Getzen Proteus? If it’s your main axe, what are your thoughts and overall verdict on it? I need a decent back up horn that I can play. I’m also asking because I have noticed that there is not much discussion on this horn, so I hope to create some insight for others to read as well.[/url] |

I have a 900 and a Proteus. I didn't intend to get a Proteus, but Getzen was selling demo horns at really good prices and I'm glad I pulled the trigger.
You can't go wrong with the Proteus. More open than the 900 and I find it easier above the staff (I top out at Eb-E so can't compare above that). Valves are usual Getzen brilliance.
You may intend for it to be your backup horn and find yourself pulling it out more than you thought you would. That's what is happening with me. |

The Proteus is a really nice, highly versatile "all purpose" horn. I'm surprised it is not more popular. Definitely give one a try! |

Is the current 907DLX model the same as the 907 Proteus? |

The new 907DLX is a different horn. Thanks everyone for the input. Does the Proteus have a tighter wrap than the 900S, and is it heavier than the 900S and or Bach Strad? |

I find the Proteus more open than a ML Bach Strad or the Getzen 907DLX. It plays more like my Bach Large bore (.462) with 72* bell. But it is a completely different animal. I play it more often than any of my other horns. It's easy to color the sound, is very responsive, etc. _________________ Brian James

That’s very interesting and I’m glad you shared that harryjames. I have a Adams A1 as my my horn, but I find that horn a bit tight to play both literally and physically to hold. Not a bad horn though. That’s why as my back up horn, I want something that is a playable as a lead horn as well as a concert’esc horn. |

The 907 Proteus is the only Getzen trumpet I like and should eventually be willing to buy. |

The Proteus plays better and has a warmer, better sound. I suppose a different bell and a different leadpipe. Could be that the regular Eterna is slightly better in projection, I see that one a little bit as a mischief-maker. |

I think Delano hit the nail on the head. The 900 has more of that jazzy daring doo to it. _________________ "There are two sides to a trumpeter's personality,

Thanks everyone for your input. It sounds like every trumpeter should be playing the Getzen Proteus. |

I tried the Proteus a couple of years ago. Loved the sound, loved the valves (as always), didn't mind the tighter wrap, but the blow was a little restrictive for me (not as bad as a Bach 37, but still a little tight)...if only it came in a larger bore or a reverse leadpipe option. At this point, I want to try the Edwards X-13 based on Trent Austin's video review of the horn and his comparison video....love the sound. Trent sounds great on anything, but there is something special to my ears about the X-13. _________________ Best Regards,

While I use Yamaha for my day to day playing, I've always enjoyed playing on Getzen Bb's.
I've played the 900, Proteus, and also the Edwards X-13
They are all great horns. 3 very different players. But, super fun to play on!
One day when I have extra scratch sitting around, I'd love to own Proteus. |

So Brett Getzen essentially recommended the Edwards X-13 in this thread...aside from both companies being in Elkhorn, WI, is there some association between Edwards and Getzen. I assume that Edwards is using Getzen parts and assembling them, but am I wrong? _________________ royjohn

From: https://www.edwards-instruments.com/about/faq/
What is your relationship with Getzen?
Getzen Instrument Co. is our parent company.
There are two companies under the Getzen umbrella: Getzen Instrument Co. and Edwards Instrument Co. The Edwards production team is located in the Getzen facility.
There is a select group of craftsman within the factory that have been hand picked to produce Edwards Instruments. These craftsmen sometimes have worked for many years before they have reached the level to build a professional level instrument. The Getzen factory allows a system where an incoming employee can learn the trade before being expected to produce the highest level of professional instruments.
Materials used in the Getzen line are the same exact quality materials that Edwards uses. _________________ Getzen Eterna 700, Eterna 800
