After not playing for many years, I am using my old very beat up horn from years past (leaks, sticking valves , etc....a good lamp project) What should I get to start playing again? _________________ just starting to play again....(and not too well!) |

That opens up lots of great horns, including most used pro Yamahas, Getzens, Olds, etc. With that budget I'd think you should look at Dillons and The Horn Trader. Tells us a couple of things that interest you and we might help you with a decision.
What mouthpiece do you have? Generally a 3C or 5C is a good adult mpc.

I have an old bach 7c. I am just learning to play again and have no style preference other than to try and get a good sound! _________________ just starting to play again....(and not too well!) |

blasto, With that budget you can get yourself a very good used Getzen Eterna model. They are excellent horns with very good valve action, easy to play with a nice open sound. Trying to find a GOOD QUALITY Bach, Yamaha or other top brand will be hard with a budget of $600.00. I'm not saying there aren't any out there at that price but it would take a long time to find one. A few years back when I was playing a Bach 43, I had it overhauled and was without it for a few months. I bought an Eterna off ebay and it filled the bill till I got the Bach back. I sold the Eterna and got most of my money back. _________________ Schilke B1L / GRe65M/e65S

Buy an Olds Ambassador or a Special. It will only cost you between 100 and 250 bucks...depending on the particulars.
You could find a used Getzen Eterna for around $400 or so.
A Bach Strad will cost you about $700-900 for a decent used horn. |

You might consider an old Yamaha 6XX or 7XX in good condition. I believe the 7XX's especially have a reputation as good quality, lightweight, easy blowing horns. If I were searching in your price range, I'd give these a serious look. As I've suggested in other threads, you might check the Yamaha website in the History link on the page for Professional trumpets to get an idea of the specs on these older Yamahas. |
