I needed to put this in our format. I found another former principal player through a little investigation on the Internet. At the Kennedy Center web site they say:

Quote:

The year 1971 marked the long-awaited opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. On opening night, Leonard Bernstein's Mass was given its world premiere in the Opera House. Among the musicians performing in the orchestra was a group of Washington D.C. area artists who would become the nucleus for the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra. Throughout the early and mid-70's, these same musicians played for a dazzling array of world-class ballet companies and other Kennedy Center events, including annual visits by American Ballet Theater, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, and Royal Ballet, world premieres of both Annie and 42nd Street, and operettas by the D'Oyly Carte Company of England. During the 1976-77 bicentennial celebration year, visiting opera companies included Bolshoi Opera, La Scala Opera, Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera. Kennedy Center musicians frequently played as extra, substitute, or off-stage musicians.

In 1978, this regular body of musicians organized and became the official house orchestra of the Kennedy Center.

I've included years before the official "beginning" of the orchestra as the official house orchestra of the Kennedy Center because George Recker was there from almost the beginning.

Tim White started with the Kennedy Center in 1994. He was my primary teacher before he moved to DC for this position. His predecessor was Fred Irby III (who teaches at Howard University), but I don't know his start date. I believe Fred's son posts here occasionally as bugleboi.

Larry,

Thanks very much for the input about Tim White's start date and an additional name to add to the list. I found Fred Irby's bio at the Howard University web site, but it didn't include his dates of tenure with the ensemble. I'll send a PM to bugleboi to see if he can help. It looks like this list is very close to completion!

Thanks again,

Derek

I received a message from James Herzog who's brother David is the Principal Trumpet with the New Japan Philharmonic. I have updated this list and will include additional information for the names of the section players when I hear back from James.

I tried a different approach to pull up the New Japan Philharmonic web site information to show the names of the musician's (you'll see the link in the post above this one). The translator that is provided by Yahoo really didn't have a clue with these names. It provided some very interesting translations, though:

2nd Violin: The Sand Field it is Good River, Small Pond Blessing, and Middle Arrow England Apparent
String Bass: Forest Garden Healthy One and Security Dragon!
Oboe: It is shallow between trust celebration
Horn: Abe elegance person
Trumpet: Cedar wooden Junichi bright

The Executive Office (assistant director): Working Hard Inside Ball

I happened to remember reading about a player in the Bill Adam forum that was from Australia and sure enough, he played with the Sydney Symphony. I found several references for John Robertson on the Internet and he was definitely with the orchestra in the 1950s. This is the only date that I have found, so I’m hoping others can provide more details.

I received a message today from Julia Creed who is the Assistant Archivist with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. She has provided additional information for this ensemble that I didn’t have before, but there are still some questions that need to be sorted out.

I’m wondering when the ROH went to having two principals in the section. Clearly by 1984 they had two Section-Principal players. Since the ROH doesn’t show John Hardy (who is listed as Principal Cornet) as Principal Trumpet, could he possibly have been the Acting Principal for the 1983-1984 season after Harry Dilley retired and before James Watson and Ian Brown were appointed to the Principal position?

I’ll keep looking to see what I can find. It would be great if someone knew how long they have had two principals in the orchestra.

Dear Derek Reaban,

Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying to your email. I was under the impression that your first request had been answered, but there seems to have been some confusion over this at our end. Below are the details I have been able to glean about the tenure of Royal Opera House Orchestra’s principal trumpet players. This information is taken from annual reports and nightly programmes, which do not always indicate if players are co-principals.

Start-End Name

2003-Current_______Ian Balmain
1984-Current_______Ian Brown
1992-2001_________Malcolm Smith
1975-Current_______John Hardy (member of trumpet section during these dates but not listed as co-principal trumpet in our records)
1984-1990_________James Watson
1978-1980_________Paul Archibald (member of trumpet section during these dates but not listed as co-principal in our records)
1958-1963_________Elgar Howarth (member of trumpet section during these dates but not listed as principal in our records)
1955-1983_________Harry Dilley (continues to play in orchestra after this date, but not as principal)
194?-1954_________David Mason (cannot confirm his starting date as principal)
1946-????_________W. Rushworth (cannot confirm end date as principal)

2004-2005 Section:
Ian Balmain Section-Principal
Ian Brown Section-Principal
John Hardy Principal Cornet
David Carstairs Sub Principal
Ruth Shaddock Sub Principal

I hope this information is of interest and if we can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us again.

I received a phone call this morning from Herschel Kreloff (former Principal trumpet with the Phoenix Symphony). He didn’t have specific dates for me, but he has provided me with additional information for our list on the PSO.

He believes that Paul Nelson was the principal trumpet after George Paugh (he wasn’t familiar with this name). He said Paul was both a trumpet player and a composer and went on to teach at one of the ivy league schools. Any idea how I might contact him?

Next is a player named Kenneth Meile (although he wasn’t certain about the spelling – it sound’s like May Lee). He believes that Kenneth was in the chair for either half a season or 1 and a half years. If anyone has the correct spelling for his last name and contact information that would be great!

Herschel Kreloff followed Kenneth and when he left for Chicago Harold Hines (former ASU trumpet professor) was principal trumpet with the PSO. Unfortunately he wasn’t sure on the exact dates for this information.

I’m still hopeful that I will hear back from Jack Fuchs who was the timpani player for many years and has all of the PSO programs from when he began playing with the ensemble.

I attended the Santa Fe Opera performance with my family last weekend. We typically fly into Albuquerque and then rent a vehicle for the drive up to Santa Fe. This year I arranged to stop by the Special Collections branch of the Albuquerque Public Library to look through the past programs for the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.

My Wife watched my three little boys while my Mom and I went through the 6 albums of programs in the library (1932 through 1974). I made great progress on this list, but there are still a few blanks that need to be filled in. I know that Kenneth Anderson played in the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra (as a section player) from 1965 to 1993. He was principal in the New Mexico Symphony (formerly the Albuquerque Symphony and the Albuquerque Civic Orchestra) from 1951 – 1974 based on the programs that we looked at. I’m guessing that he was probably principal trumpet until the 1986 season when they held auditions for principal trumpet since he was still active with the SFO Orchestra for another 7 seasons after 1986.

Does anyone have contact information for Kenneth Anderson so that I could confirm his dates of tenure?

Very interesting to note all of the different spellings of the players names from season to season. I especially liked Carl L. Cramer, C. L. Cramer, Carl F. Kramer, Carl F. Cramer, Carl Cramer and F. S. Pier, F. C. Pier, Duke Pier. I checked these spellings very carefully, and represented the names exactly as they appeared in the programs (I used the most common spellings for the list of principals in the above list).
