Hey everyone,

There are several straight or cup mutes in my bin that need attention before they're really usable due to worn or missing corks.

With Harmon mutes, decent sheet cork is available along the funky foam which was recommended on this forum.

However, I couldn't find any suggestions for the smaller non-sheet corks. I can always buy replacement corks from H&B or Jo-Ral (most of these are Alessi or H&B mutes) but I was wondering if there were other suggestions out there.

Someone suggested a while ago using bicycle tube as the 'cork'.

Since I've done this, I'd NEVER go back to using cork.

The mutes just stay in without any other help.

I think you're asking about the corks on like a straight or cup mute.. In a pinch I've used the little nylon dots that are used for door bumper on kitchen cabinet doors (to keep them from slamming-door on frame).. Lined them up in a row where the cork used to be. Find them at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.

Then moldable glue sticks, Sugru. I'm not sure about the long term affect on silver or lacquer.. this works ok.. still think I prefer replacement corks from Jo-Ral.

Are you recommending it for harmon mutes? If not how do you cut it into strips to put on a straight mute?

I need the info on how to cut and place the bicycle inner tube on the mute. What one uses the inner tube on probably depends what size mute and what size trumpet bell one is using. I've got a practice mute I need to use the inner tube on. I'm hoping Someone will explain how to cut and glue it... Is there a Youtube video to help? I'm hoping...

I buy the corks, usually Jo-Ral I think. The best glue I've found is "Shoe Goo." One container will do all your mutes, and the mutes of everyone you know, for the rest of your life, plus fix your shoes if you should need to.

Here's an amazon link, but my local hardware store stocks it:

Use google to search trumpetherald. You can limit the search by adding site:trumpetherald to the search terms. This works much better than the built in search.

Tim Wendt, user trpthrld, posted the original suggestion if my memory is correct.

Here is the post I remember.

Thanks but this won't work for a cup or straight mute.

That is precisely what I'm asking. The long or short pieces of cork. Not for a Harmon mute, but a straight or a cup.

Thanks for those of you who have chimed in, please continue...

I've found this works well:

https://www.amazon.com/MACs-Auto-Parts-49-61421-Material/dp/B071LJT2NQ

And it can be cut to any dimension.

And I use Weldwood as an adhesive. Takes time to finish gassing off, but once cured it's rock solid.

Good idea; my local hardware store sells small sheets of cork for gasket-making. It's pretty thin, but then I often wind up spending loads of time filing down the Jo-Ral corks anyhow.

I've had a good process for replacing them once you have your desired cork that was passed to me from Chris Legaux at TrumCor. This will be a little general as I don't have the sheet with me at the moment, but I can type it out for you later if you'd like.

1.) clean area with mineral spirits or some kind of paint thinner.
2.) lightly score the area. For metal, a little more may be needed.
3.) apply a thin layer of contact cement to the area AND to the cork itself. The cork might need to two layers as it is an absorbent material.
4.) Press on and let cure.

Read the directions for the contact cement of your choice, but I've had NO issues with corks falling off after using this method and I've tried it on a few different mutes.

There is sheet cork and foam available in a variety of thickness at most (and certainly all the large) craft and fabric stores. Including neoprene which does super for harmon mutes. You can also cannibalize an old mouse pad for this material.
